My first job, when we moved to the U.S. in 2001, was as a treasury analyst for a Fortune 100 company. At that stage I had never heard of AFP or the CTP credential. My boss had his CTP qualification and my curious nature led me to peruse his AFP Exchange magazine where I learned more about the exam and the benefits of the certification. I wanted to learn and understand more about the treasury field so I decided to sit for the exam. Once I started studying I realized the treasury field is so much bigger than cash management, which is what I was doing at the time. The certification and the subsequent knowledge has helped steer my career upwards in the treasury field.

When I earned my CTP, I wasn’t very experienced and had only been working in the treasury arena for two years. Now, twelve years later, I’m working on projects and in areas that I had only studied about in the book of knowledge and didn’t think that I would be doing at this point in my career. Not only has the certification benefited me greatly in my career but my membership and involvement with AFP has opened many doors for me. The association has aided me with networking opportunities and helped me stay on top of changing regulations, technologies and topics that are relevant to my career and growth.

Now that I am in the position of hiring I actively seek candidates who have earned the CTP credential because, not only have they completed comprehensive treasury education, but they also have the same passion for the treasury field that I do. If you’re going to spend all that time on the CTP exam, you know that they’re invested in the treasury profession.
